Time spent in the corner

Time spent in the corner

The painter is coming tomorrow, so we had to go ahead and pack up the baby’s room this afternoon. I say “baby” but he’s really a toddler now. Our sermon at church today was about the tough passing of times in our lives being like little deaths and resurrections preparing us for the big one on down the road…perfect for us right now. So I was very stoic about it all and carefully packed up his little keepsakes and sent the changing table and rocking chair on to storage to await their “resurrection” at our next stop, wherever that may turn out to be. The day wore on with more preparations and bedtime drew near. Bradley was making one more trip to the storage unit and so we decided it would be a “ride to sleep” night. We’ve done that before, more often lately as we are weaning.

Only this time as I strapped my precious little boy into his carseat he was so undone—the hard play of the day was sending tears running down his face. My first impulse was of course to change course and take him into his room, cut the lights and rock him to sleep with prayers, our special lullaby and the sounds of his wave machine. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks—I will never again sit in that corner and do that. The very last time was last night and I hadn’t stopped to appreciate it, hadn’t realized it until it was too late...then I joined Charlie Mac in his tears. Sweet Bradley offered through his own misty eyes to bring the chair back with him, but as with anything about love--to contrive it is just not right. I took a deep breath and went back inside as they pulled away from the house.

I know that it sounds silly—that the same rocking chair, noisemaker and most especially the same sweet boy will be at the next place, but that spot on this earth of ours is where I grew from who I was before to who I am now, where I really grew up. To leave that spot is to leave a quiet place I shared with my son and God alone.

This spot is where I learned the beginning of what it takes to be a mother…and just how much that really is. I’ve logged countless hours of nursing, rocking, singing and most of all praying in the cool darkness of that room. Sometimes well after the baby was sleeping soundly in my arms I’d rock on looking at him in wonder, throw caution to the winds and risk thirty more minutes to steal a kiss from his little lips. There were times when I begged the Lord above for guidance or wept in frustration over how scared or lost I felt. It was there that I learned not just to ask, but to listen for the guidance that's always right there and to see that I'm right where I'm supposed to be. I learned to overcome myself, and I learned it in that corner.

I’ll always remember that spot, just the way it was. I’ll remember it the way I remember the Gulf under the moonlight and winter stars in the Delta. It’s part of who I am, so it will always be with me wherever I go…wherever that may turn out to be.

Woah! It’s been literally months since I have been able to blog here. I would like to reassure all of Charlie Mac’s wonderful fans that we are taking every opportunity to reconnect with you and that we will hopefully be more able to post here now that the insanity of the last two months has passed. Luckily, either I or somebody else has had a camera for most of said insanity, and I can post a ginormous post to cover it all, if only with a summary.

In the past couple of months The Iddle’s world has grown to include more and more of the outdoors. This started in our backyard as we began the transformation from Slattery to “nice folks.” He has been so eager to help!

As every mother blessed with a healthy child has to, I have learned to deal with skinned knees:

We went strawberry picking for my birthday and it was a blast! While we were more taken with the actual picking of the berries than CM was, the rows made great paths and the petting zoo were a real hit!

We spent Easter as a family in Gulf Shores Alabama, with the Wilsons, the Keiths and my Daddy C. It was so much fun dying Easter eggs and the Easter Bunny brought Charlie Mac lots of goodies. Included in his basket was a really cool green fuzzy football. One thing I never ever thought of before was how very much an egg looks like a football. Our ever astute Iddle happily demonstrated this with each and every egg he found after his proper handling of the “real” football was applauded with gusto. All the easier to peel them after they’ve been sent on a forward pass, I say.

Bradley returned to Georgetown Easter evening and Charlie Mac and I stayed at the beach for another week. It was such a great time and when the sun finally came out Charlie Mac had a great time at the water’s edge. Our beach house is on the edge of a nature preserve so there is a huge amount of open beach there. In fact, I don’t think CM had ever seen so much open space and he had a great time going as far as he could before returning to check in. One thing I learned is that if I want him to limit his traveling, I need to stay watchful from one spot rather than following him. If I follow him he goes on forever and ever! If I stay put he goes out and comes back and goes out again.

As many of you know, Bradley was very involved in SU’s environmental club. We attended the Earth Day event as a family and Charlie Mac had a great time trying to join in the drum circle while I was treated to a trip down memory lane watching the college hippy scene. Ahhh….good times.

Onto the grown up hippy scene (kidding daddy!) we had a WONDERFUL time at my 10th anniversary of attending the Old Settlers Bluegrass festival. We go every year and Charlie Mac spent very little time with us there last year. This year the wonderful Kristin Maverick came with us to help so Charlie Mac has now experience camping at a music festival for the first time. Makes a mama proud, you know?!

WE GOT A PUPPY!!!
The arrival of The Good Captain Guero Oberon Hiatt into our lives is a really cool story. We had a festival two weeks ago here in Georgetown and we live right off the square where it was. Some people pulled up in front of our house to park with three lab puppies. I was thinking to myself that I really wished Sandy were here--I think that all the time actually--and was thinking that I'm not ready for another dog because I'm still looking for her all the time. Then I heard the guy say "we have three left." We walked over to talk to them and the pups were born the day after Sandy died--two and a half months ago. It seemed too serendipitous and we had wanted a dog that would be good both at home and in the field.

I'll never get over Sandy, and I'm glad for that. Guero is a good pup and is already house trained, sitting and fetching. It's almost like Sandy was on her way up to heaven and he was on his way down and she told him to go take care of her family. I still cry about her at least every other day, and I'm sure I always will from time to time. My dad still cries over Wolf who died 45 years ago. I'm happy that we have a dog in the house though, and I can love him and miss her at the same time.

Our cousin Lauren and Uncle Robert came for a day and brought with them a gift from Charlie Mac’s human Aunt Sandy. I think he looks quite dashing, don’t you??

We have been working like dogs on our house and Charlie Mac has done his best to help. BoPeep and Papaw came to help us with the painting and landscaping. See them here hard at work:

hahaha! In all seriousness, we couldn’t have done it without them!

Graduation!!! After years of dedication, Bradley has graduated!! I can’t tell you how proud I am of him and how much his dedication has inspired me. It’s true that you can do what you set your mind to, even if you have to take the long, hard way around.

Clearly, Charlie Mac is as proud as I am:

Taking advantage of having as much family in town at the same time as possible, Charlie Mac was christened the day following Bradley’s graduation. He wore the christening gown that Roberts, Augusta and I wore. His Godparents are Roberts, Augusta and Amber. It was a beautiful service and Father Steve used water from the river Jordan which just gives me goosebumps!

We enjoyed the week between graduation and Bradley’s return to the rat race with some time together as a family. After two years of high speed pressure, it was so great to just enjoy each other. We have been hiking every day and have really been able to discover some of the beauty that our little part of the world has to offer.

Whew! Well, I hope that catches us up with everyone and I promise to be better about this!

Let's go jogging!.....almost

I finally got the right size inner tube to repair my jogging stroller's tire. This afternoon I attempted to put it on. Seeing as the last time I had anything to do with the changing of an inner tube was watching my daddy change one circa 1985 in Pascagoula....it's going to become a "group" project tonight when Bradley gets home from work. Charlie Mac sure gave his best shot at helping his mama though....

Let's see here, this one seems to be lacking something....

There we go, that should do it!
Or, I could just toss it over to the other side....

Who needs an inner tube when you can spin the wheel just as well without one???
OK, OK, when's Daddy getting home?

Veggie Pockets made a LOT more easily...

Hey--Not to beat a dead horse, but since I found such an easier way to do this I have to pass it on....last night I used biscuit dough* instead of the dinner rolls and just smashed the circles out big before loading in a good dollop of filling--SO much easier than the cutting, etc I said before.

love love love,
lizzie

*I still think that whole wheat dough would be better yada yada, but I seriously got a whole tube done in about five minutes while my oven was pre-heating for dinner.

Veggie Pockets!

Toddler Recipe, coming up!

The challenge of feeding a family with healthy and yet delicious food is really turning out to be my favorite pastime. Bradley is a great chef and makes the most amazing meals--last night was a veggie noodle stir fry to die for. I'm going for ease and speed most of the time though (Iddle wrangling being what it is...). I think we have hit on a winner with this one and I wanted to share it.

I have pieced this together from the emails I wrote to a couple of friends about this recipe I tried today. It was a great success as far as Charlie Mac (and his parents) were concerned and pretty easy too!

This morning:
we were trying to think of ways to get veggies into Charlie Mac without always just dicing them and thought we'd make ravioli (thanks, Good Eats!)--that's just a bit ambitious for our schedule though, so yesterday we came up with the idea of using biscuit dough to make little pouches (again, thanks, Alton!) of different combos. He can pick them up and the bread will soak up any juices (less mess--yay!), plus when he's older I thought it might be something fun we could do together. I'm trying mashed sweet potato with cream cheese today.

After lunch:
OK--the first batch I've made using "dinner rolls" from a tube.

I cut them in half (with scissors, forget trying to cut dough with a knife) and then opened them up from the cut side.

Put in a 1/2 - a whole teaspoon of filling (you really could use anything here, I used the sweet tater/philly combo) in the middle and pinch the edges shut in a taco shape. Eyeball the amount of filling to go with the size of your circle of dough so that you can get the edges together cleanly. This keeps it from popping open while they bake. But even if they do pop open, it's no biggie.

Grease the baking sheet even though the tube says not to because I didn't and they stuck a bit. Bake for 9-10 minutes at 400 or at whatever temp the tube says to.

Voila!

I am going to look up some dough recipes because I just don't like giving him flour that isn't whole grain and I'm thinking that the dough would be easier to work with because I could just roll out little balls of it into circles instead of trying to re-train tube dough.

Dough Recipe I found:
I bet that you could buy something like this frozen from a big grocery store like Central Market or another premium one, but for home made, I'm thinking that this one would be a good one. The tube dough worked really well though.

Just a little while ago:
Charlie Mac really loved them--he "mmmmed" his way through three for lunch and then three more for supper. He ran all over the place with them and I haven't found any sweet potato on anything yet! (Yes, we do try to sit down for most meals, but today was insane...call it "recipe research...")

I didn't bake them all, but sprayed several with a little Pam (I would recommend not stacking them and using olive oil if you have to though---God only knows what Pam is doing to us) and stacked them in a bowl covered with saran in the fridge. I popped a refrigerated batch in for supper while the oven was still preheating and baked for 10 minutes. I think they were even better than the first ones.

I'm freezing the ones I have left and will test them in a couple of days to see how they hold up to the big chill. We could be onto something here! Hot Pockets, watch out, mama pockets are here to stay! (waka waka)

Looking to the future of pocket food...

I am going to work more on these trying out the pizza dough and the freezing and maybe "painting" on them with food coloring (organic of course :-)). These would be great for me and Brad when we are on the go as well!

I also think I am going to get a ravioli maker and then poor Charlie Mac may never learn to use utensils.(...kidding Daddy!) But I am getting a ravioli maker--look at all the options! http://www.kasbahouse.com/villawareonline/cavatelliandraviolimakers.asp

Walking by the cabinet the other day, what did I see, but a wee Iddle, peeking back at me!

Seriously--Charlie Mac's Cabinet is as much fun for me as it is for him! He's figured out how to climb INTO it now!!
Yes Daddy, I know that this means that I now need to watch him even more carefully around the dryer, the dishwasher, the oven and open tiger pits.

Kite Festival

You gotta love a town with a yearly kite festival! Austin is the greatest in ways just such as this. Today we headed down to a Zilker Park that was packed with kids of all ages and their dogs and it couldn't have been a more perfect day for flying kites. Cold, bright and with a brisk breeze. Charlie Mac had a good time until he got tired. He also got to spend some one on one time with his Auntie Guesa. All in all a good day!

Born Free.....

The Iddle reminds us all that we are....

Born free, as free as the wind blows
As free as the grass grows
Born free to follow your heart

Live free and beauty surrounds you
The world still astounds you
Each time you look at a star

Stay free, where no walls divide you
You're free as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide

Born free, and life is worth living
But only worth living
'cause you're born free

(Stay free, where no walls divide you)
You're free as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide

Born free, and life is worth living
But only worth living
'cause you're born free

hahaha--in all seriousness, he didn't really run off nekkid! Just a little post bathtime cruising around!
